Headcanon: Atsushi can only fall asleep when he’s either completely exhausted or when he knows he’s safe.
He rarely got a good nights sleep growing up. Something that carried over when he was abandoned to the streets. He’d walk for hours despite having no energy hoping it would tire him out enough.
The first true good night sleep Atsushi had was during a game night with the Agency. Dazai was in the middle of antagonising Kunikida when Atsushi slump forward.
Luckily he only lightly head butted Dazai’s shoulder.
But he didn’t move.
Dazai was going to ask what was up and then noticed Atsushi was knocked out. He got everyone’s attention and Ranpo deduced it was because Atsushi was exhausted.
Kunikida made a note to make sure Atsushi wasn’t overworking himself (hypocrite.) While Dazai attempted to gently pry Atsushi off him. He froze when Atsushi cried out and clung to Dazai’s arm. His whole body shaking with fear.
Ranpo’s grin left his face, he took off his glasses and simply gestured for Dazai to stay.
Dazai frowned but did so. Running a hand through Atsushi’s hair and reassuring him he was here. It was a relief to them all when Atsushi calmed down. Make an adorable chuffing sound as he did so.
Kunikida questioned what was happening and Kenji said he seen animals on the farm act like this. Ones that were injured or had been mistreated by others would act on edge.
But when they found others that made them feel better they’d act more like themselves.
And stick to the others like glue.
And the Agencies were Atsushi’s glue, his safety.
A blanket was wrapped around Atsushi and in the end they all had a sleepover in the living room of the dorm building.
Because after that none of them could bare to leave Atsushi alone right now. And Atsushi had the best sleep he’d had in years.

dazai fidgets a bunch, and you can usually tell who he feels close to based on who it is he fidgets . . . with.
he would mess with odasaku and ango's glasses at the bar, grabs kunikida's shoulders and arms and messes with the fabric of his clothes, plays around with atsushi's hair, and messes with just about every bit of chuuya. his hands, his gloves (on more than one occasion he's managed to slip one off and marvel at the ridiculous softness of his skin), his hair, his sleeves, (his face)
the only people to have reciprocated this are oda and chuuya. oda would mess with dazai's hair in the same way the latter now does atsushi's. chuuya would mess with dazai's hands during meetings, sometimes fidgeting as well with the topmost layer of his bandages.
just. dazai not knowing jackshit about normal physical touch and getting his fill in whatever lame ways he can
Whenever one of them feels down the other two take a day off and go to their favourite places and get favourite food or just stay at home cuddling
Kunikida who sees Chuuya and Dazai as completely and utterly human.
But also Kunikida witnessing loss infront of his eyes and breaking down over his own failures.
And Dazai and Chuuya holding Kunikida in their arms and having to remind him that he's human too.
I forgot that the headmaster is a person and can be buried...
Odasaku, Sasaki, and the orphanage headmaster are all buried in the same cemetery.
So Kunikida, Atsushi, and Dazai all run into each other grave visiting regularly and politely pretend they don’t. They never acknowledge the meaning behind the bouquets brought, even if all of them know the others know flower language. They never acknowledge the tear streaks down Atsushi’s face, or the solemn look on Kunikida’s. Atsushi never points out how the scent of whiskey is always a bit stronger on Dazai’s coat. They never acknowledge the location of their accidental meetings.
Sometimes Kunikida might offer to take them to get food, or Atsushi will offer a random hard candy from his pocket, on colder days Dazai might lend his coat. None of them are really themselves when faced with grief, and none of them will to hold it against each other.

Dazai, whispering to Kunikida: Why does he always look at me when he says that?

Atsushi, writing Dazai's report: He said he's going through an existential crisis and won't get up of his futon cause he doesn't know what's real anymore. 😅
Kunikida: 😡
Kunikida: Ranpo have you seen Dazai?
Ranpo, clearly lying: Um, no. That idiot's probably off working his dumb plan.
Ranpo, who also helps Dazai with his plan: He's so stupid.
Kunikida:
Ranpo: You know, the only reason the president hasn't fired him is that we're worried that he'll kill himself.
Ranpo: *leaves*
Kunikida, internally: Yep. They're up to something together.
Kunikida: Dazai, just ask him out!
Dazai: Absolutely not, there’s no way he’s interested.
Atsushi: *confused* Wait, hold on- Mr. Dazai AND MR. CHUUYA HAVENT BEEN DATING THIS WHOLE TIME???
Dazai: *has music loud while dancing in the middle of the office*
Kunikida, turning down the volume: Get back to work, now Dazai!
Dazai: How dare you, Iago, Backstabber?
Kunikida: I'm surprised you've read Othello.
Dazai: What the hell's Othello? I'm calling you the parrot from Aladdin.
Kunikida: Are you sure you can handle it?
Dazai: Uh, well, let's see;
Dazai: Difficult, last-minute and crucial as hell.
Dazai: Meets all the Dazai criteria.
Dazai, yelling: KUNIKIDA HAVE YOU SEEN MY TOP?!
Kunikida: Chuuya's in the office.
Dazai: Ok thanks :).
Chuuya, from the office: THE FUCK?!
*the agency reorganizes and cleans the office cause it is a total mess*
Kunikida: We need a more efficient method. What about the Norwegian system Munkensmat?
The ada: ???
Kunikida: In Munkensmat, you get rid of all personal possessions except one.
Dazai: Ok I'll go first. It's between my antidepressants and this fidget spinner.
Dazai: *throws in the can his meds*
Dazai: I think I made the right call.
Dazai: When you see him, please don’t freak out ok?
Kunikida: I’m not going to freak out. Who ever you’re dating I’ll always be accepting of them. Even if they were working in the port mafia...
Dazai: Alright, you can come in!
*Chuuya walks in*
Kunikida: Mr. Nakahara, please get out of the way. I’m trying to see who is Dazai dating!

Atsushi: Sometimes when I’m happy, I have this monotone voice trying to sound excited *pushes Dazai’s paper back to his side of the desk*
Kunikida: *not looking up his work* Wow
Atsushi: Other times I have a happy face and sound so monotone or depress *goes back to his work*
Kunikida: *looks up at him, laughing and with a mocking monotone voice* Welcome to the Detective Agency
Atsushi: *pouts* Be happy I’m not killing puppies
Kunikida/Dazai: *Is taken back completely as they burst out laughing* Killing puppies?
