BLOODBOUND: adrian raines x mc (isla)
summary: adrian and isla take a bubble bath together while discussing what’s to come...
warnings: none!! enjoy
Isla turns the doorknob to Takeshi's lavish penthouse. The simple action drains way more energy than it should have due to Kano's first lesson. Her body is aching all over and begging for some respite. It’s a miracle she didn’t collapse in the streets of Tokyo while dragging herself home.
To her pleasant surprise, Adrian is lingering in the living room. He's standing in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows, his back facing her. His suit jacket is tossed on the couch, leaving him in his white dress shirt and gray trousers.
She catches his expression in the glass. Adrian's eyebrows are furrowed and his jaw is clenched. He's tense, resulting in him fiddling with something in his hand. With a small sigh, he tucks it away.
Isla shuts the door behind her carefully and shuffles quietly to where he is, a mischievous grin playing on her lips
"Whatcha thinking about?" she asks, wrapping her arms around his waist.
Adrian flinches with surprise before craning his head to find Isla. He visibly relaxes and turns to envelope her in a proper hug, smiling warmly. "Nothing. Just a little stressed."
Isla hums in response, "Aren't we all?" She sighs, feeling content as the warmth from Adrian's body encircles her. He feels like home, he feels like safety.
"How's your first lesson by the way?"
"It was... definitely something. Kano knows what he's doing, that's for sure."
"That's good to hear," Adrian says, nodding. He pulls back to take in her ruffled appearance. With a teasing smile, he says, "Should I run a bath for the both of us? You look..."
"Watch it, Adrian Raines. Psychic training is hard."
He laughs, holding his hands up in defense. "Alright, alright."
"But yes, please. I could use a bath and your company right now." Isla pecks him on the cheek before disappearing into her room to change.

Isla lets out a deep sigh of pleasure as she sinks into the warm, bubbly water. The smell of lavender fills the large room, bringing a bit of reprieve to Isla's muscles. Unfortunately, Takeshi isn't a huge fan of candles, but the stylish chandelier hanging in the middle of the room definitely suffices.
She leans against the opposite side of the bathtub, facing Adrian. He runs a soap-soaked hand along his toned arm with a small, almost shy smile. It makes Isla blush, despite the simple gesture. She forgets how Greek-god-like Adrian's body looks sometimes.
"We need to do this more often," she murmurs.
Adrian smiles ruefully. "Maybe after we take care of Rheya"
Isla's smile falters, reality hitting her in the face like a slap. "Yeah..."
She remembers where they are: Tokyo, Japan. They’re on the run from Rheya and whatever she's planning in New York. A chill runs down Isla’s spine as she thinks, Rheya’s powers equate to that of a Goddess, what if mine aren’t enough? A lump grows in her throat, making it difficult to swallow. The bath water feels cold all of a sudden.
"Isla? Are you okay?" Adrian asks, concern laced in his voice. He sits up and reaches out to take her hand, running small circles on the back of her palm using his thumb.
"Yeah, I, I'm okay. I just..." Isla runs a hand through her hair. Her eyes well up with tears that are hard to blink away. "Adrian, I'm scared."
"Come here," he beckons.
The bubbly water sloshes around, as Isla pushes herself across the tub to rest on his chest. Adrian's arms settle around her body. He rubs her back reassuringly and presses a light kiss to her temple. She hears his heart thumping at a steady rhythm and taking a deep breath, she tries to mimic him.
Adrian tucks a strand of fallen hair behind her ear, mumbling, "I'm scared, too."
A moment later, he lowers his head to meet Isla's eyes. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have brought up Rheya. You've had a long day and—"
"No, don't apologize. We... we should probably talk about this." Isla sits up straight and takes Adrian's hand, twining her fingers with his. She faces him with a sorrow look on her face.
He raises an eyebrow, waiting for her to go on.
"Adrian, when it comes down to it, you know not all of us are going to make it out. You know I have to be the one who..." Isla trails off, letting the sentence finish itself. She swallows. "It has to be me."
"No. Isla, please don't talk like that." Adrian lets out an anxious sigh, leaning his forehead against hers. He brushes his thumb over her cheekbones, whispering, "I can't lose you again."
"I know... I don't want to lose you either." She presses her lips to Adrian's. The kiss is brief, but it's wrapped with all of her fears, all of her worries.
Isla is hurt, angry, and most of all, terrified of what's to come. The petrifying image of Jax, Kamilah, Lily, and Adrian stalking towards her with hatred in their eyes and blood dripping down their faces is forever etched in her mind. Rheya’s powers took away her best friends for a moment. They took away Adrian. She can, and most likely will, do it again.
Isla shivers involuntarily at the thought of losing the most important people of her life once more.
"Isla,” Adrian says. “I have something to give you.” He digs around the scattered clothing on the ground and produces a ring from his trouser’s pocket. It's a beautiful band encrusted with diamonds and rubies, making Isla gasp with realization.
"Adrian, are you proposing to me.?" Isla breathes out. She goes stiff, a million things running through her head. Oh god, is this really happening right now? Is he joking? He has to be joking, right? Adrian Raines is proposing to me in a bathtub right now.
Adrian blinks and chuckles, shaking his head. “Isla, you can relax. I’m not proposing. Not right now at least. Sorry for the misunderstanding.”
"Oh! Right. It’s okay." Isla lets out a sheepish laugh, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear to hide her embarrassment.
"It's a promise ring." He takes Isla's hand in his and slips on the ring.
It shimmers under the chandelier as Isla twists and turns her hand to marvel just how stunning the ring looks. "Oh, Adrian, it's beautiful... Thank you. How did you have time to get this commissioned?"
"I... made this myself," he says, shifting his eyes away from Isla's twinkling one's. He's blushing, making her giggle with delight. "Maybe fifty—no, forty years ago?"
“I didn’t know you were such a craftsman,” Isla says, grinning.
Adrian chuckles. “When you’ve lived as long as I have, you can basically do anything. Give yourself 200 more years, Isla.”
A brief moment of silence passes before Adrian speaks up again. "I was saving this ring in case I found the right person again. And well"—he brushes his thumb over the promise ring on Isla's finger—"I did. I found you, Isla Sterling."
Isla can’t help but take his face between her hands, planting a kiss on his lips. "I love you, Adrian." She relaxes back into his body, leaning her head on his shoulder.
Something warm settles in her stomach. With Adrian’s protective arms around her, she knows nothing can hurt her. She also knows that she’d do anything to keep him safe from Rheya. Anything.
Adrian rests his cheek on her head. "I love you, too. More than you can imagine.”
