Wisteria

Wisteria

Summary: Spencer runs into a woman and her daughter at the park.

Content Warnings: single mom reader, Season 5 Spencer, fluff, meet-cutes, mentions of the uncanny valley case, Hotch's kidnapping and Haley's murder. references to cheating, adultery, choking and suicide (typical case warnings)

Word Count: 8.9K

a/n: Song Fic, based on Ivy and this is me trying by Taylor Swift.

There’s a woman on his usual bench in the park, she’s reading a book and slowly pushing a stroller back and forth in a soothing motion. It’s a beautiful sight. He takes a deep breath and sits beside her, smiling as she peaks her head up to smile back at him.

“I usually sit here on Saturdays,” he whispers, unsure if the baby she’s watching is sleeping or not. “I can leave if you’d rather be alone?”

“Oh no,” she whispers back, waving one hand as she swats the thoughts out of his mind. “I just couldn’t get her to sleep today, I thought the fresh air would tire her out but she’s still awake.”

Spencer nods, wanting to peek into the stroller and see the baby but he knows that’s not always appreciated, and yet the woman pulls the cover back and shows off her little miracle. “This is Ivy, I’m Y/N, her mom.”

“Hello,” his voice drops so low as he leans towards the stroller, “I’m Spencer.” He reaches into the stroller and lets the little girl hold his finger, shaking her hand with a fond smile. “She’s around 3 months, right?”

The mother nods, “yeah, she just hit the 3-month mark last week, her little personality is really showing lately.”

“The reason she’s not sleeping is that she’s between growth spurts, she grows approximately 2 pounds and 1 and a half inches each month, and they sleep a lot when they’re growing,” he rambles and yet Ivy finds him fascinating.

“Interesting,” Y/N says under her breath.

“You’ve probably also noticed that she prefers to eat a lot during the day and not as much at night?”

“Yeah, actually. Are you a doctor?”

“Not a medical doctor, I just absorb knowledge like a sponge,” he finally turns to her, still having a finger held by Ivy, to see Y/N smiling at him. “My godson had a very hard time sleeping, he’s almost 2 now.”

“Right now her favourite thing to do is look around,” Y/N bragged, “you can hold her if you want? She finds new faces fascinating.”

Before he can even object, Y/N is reaching into the stroller and taking her daughter out, kissing her cheek softly before handing her to Spencer. She is so much lighter than Henry, he forgot just how tiny they can be. He holds her under her armpits, her tiny feet resting on his thighs, bouncing on her own as she stretches. She immediately reaches for his cheek, touching his face and tugging on his hair next.

“Oh yeah, she likes to grip my hair too,” Y/N laughs slightly, “do you have any of your own?”

He shakes his head, “not yet, I’m hoping to one day. My godson is the only baby I’ve ever really spent time with.”

But Ivy makes him smile, she coos at him and sticks her tongue out, mimicking the speech patterns she’s witnessing, “it’s actually really good for her to see people talking to each other, it’ll make her want to start talking earlier.”

Y/N can’t help but smile at the sight of Spencer holding her baby, making faces right back at her and being unbelievably cute. “I’m against baby talk, I talk to her like I would with a best friend, she knows all my gossip."

“My mom was a professor, I sat in on some of her lectures as a baby and I’m pretty sure that’s why I’m a doctor now,” he makes a joke that gets a laugh from Y/N and a smile from Ivy.

“I have 3 Ph.D.’s…” he whispers at Ivy, “that means I’m crazy and enjoy spending money just to prove I have a big brain.”

Y/N laughs, “I’m a child development practitioner…”

“Oh,” he feels dumb now, “so you know everything I’ve already mentioned.”

She nods, “yep, I know all the little tips, tricks, and hacks to get her to sleep, and yet she doesn’t want to listen. She is so curious, if she could sleep with her eyes open, she would.”

“My mother said I was basically nocturnal, I still am,” he laughs at himself, making Ivy giggle a bit and Y/N gasps.

“Of course,” she throws her hands up in defeat, “I’ve been doing whole ass comedy routines to get you to laugh, and all it takes is a giggle from some man in the park? Are you kidding me, little lady?”

Ivy laughs again and Y/N can’t help but smile, “okay, you’re forgiven, he is cute isn’t he?”

Spencer blushes, “sorry, I’ve never had this effect on a baby before. My friends at work actually call it the Reid Effect when I make babies cry and dogs bark…”

“She’s a very good judge of character.”

Spencer moves her to sit on his knee, facing her mom, and yet she still turns to look up at him, wiggling to get closer and making grabbing hands at him. He pulls her in towards his chest in a small hug of sorts, supporting her diapered bum and bouncing her slightly.

“You’re really good with babies, I’m sure your godson is very loved,” Y/N compliments him with an adoring smile.

“Oh, Henry is so loved,” he huffed out a laugh, “his aunt Penelope spoils him the most, now that he’s getting older and can build creative stories in his play, we have been spending a lot of time playing dinosaurs. He might be a paleontologist one day.”

“You said he’s almost 2?” She’s a little shocked, “that’s quite impressive, I’m excited for when she starts to play, right now it’s just a lot of touching and staring, I have a feeling she’ll be a fast learner too.”

“Your partner and you are doing a wonderful job with her,” he throws it out there just to gauge if she’s single.

“Oh, no,” she shakes her head with a disgusted look on her face, “I’m not, no— it’s just me.”

“Well, if you ever need anything I can give you my card? I’m not a real doctor but my friend JJ spent a lot of late nights awake with Henry, she’d end up calling me because she knew I’d be awake anyway.”

“Thank you,” her smile returns, “I’m sure your wife, Penelope, won't mind?”

“Oh no,” he has the same panic in his voice, “we’re Henry’s godparents but we’re not together.”

“Oh…”

“Yeah,” Spencer smiles, “that’s why kids are a pipe dream for me, if I had a wife I would be with my own kids right now…”

She hums, the sadness returning but she doesn’t let her face drop as Ivy stares back and forth at them, “her dad left us. He’s known the whole time how badly I wanted kids, and as soon as I got pregnant he acted like I was ruining his life so I told him he could leave and never saw him again.”

“My father left when I was 10, sometimes I wish he never was there in the first place because it would hurt less…” he explains it carefully. “At least he didn’t give her the hope of staying and having a real family just to rip it away from her. She’ll always know your love and what you’re willing to do for her, if you love her enough for both parents, she’ll never feel like she missed out on anything.”

“Thank you,” she smiles again, “I never thought about it that way, he never really did give me hope of a family either, we were barely dating. I wasn’t that upset when he left because he made one of my dreams come true, and if that’s all he was meant to do in my life, then so be it.”

“That’s also a wonderful way to think about it,” he agrees, holding her dream in his arms and feeling like his own might come true one day.

“Did your mom love you enough for 2 parents?” It’s a deep question to ask a stranger, “I’m sorry,” she panics when she realizes. “That’s a heavy subject."

“It’s okay,” he keeps smiling, laughing a bit at the joke he’s about to make at his own expense, “she loved me enough for about 5 people. She has schizophrenia so I spent my childhood taking care of her and every other version other she was along the way.”

“My dad was bipolar,” she nods, “it’s hard loving someone who’s different every single day.”

“But I’d do it all over again, she’s like my best friend,” he can’t help but look at Ivy, “you have a wonderful mother, she’s going to be your best friend one day too.”

“Would you like to be my friend too?” She asks softly, placing a hand on Spencer’s shoulder.

“Um,” he swallows sharply, handing Ivy back to her and watching her face drop, “I’d really like to be, but my job isn’t the best and you might not want me around.”

“You’re a doctor with 3 Ph.D.’s? What could you possibly do that’s so bad?” She tries to make him laugh and then panics when he doesn’t, “you don’t make like nuclear weapons for the government or something do you?”

“No, no, I catch serial killers,” it comes out easier than he thought.

“Like those NCIS or CSI TV shows?”

He nods, “I’m a behavioural analyst… I investigate serial crimes and by understanding why and how they did it, I figure out who’s doing the crimes.”

“Wow,” her face is still as bright and accepting as before, “that’s so incredible?”

“My boss upset a serial killer and he broke into their house and murdered his wife, and almost killed his son,” Spencer spits it out and kills the mood. “And just this week I was working on a case where a woman was kidnapping other women and dressing them up like dolls because her father r-a-p-e-d her and then put her through electroshock therapy and gave her dolls as a gift to shut her up.”

“Holy fuck,” her eyes widen and almost pop out of her head, “I mean, if you promise to not antagonize anyone who will hurt me as revenge, I’d still like to be your friend?”

He’s surprised but he nods, taking one of his cards out of his vest pocket, “okay, I actually get to watch Henry this Thursday night if you’d like to have a playdate? Henry could use some big brother practice…”

“We’d love to!” She bounces Ivy on her knee, “it’s about time we made you some friends, sweet girl.”

Spencer digs his wallet out of his pocket and finds the one and the only photo he keeps on him. It’s of Him and Henry, asleep on JJ’s couch in the same position. “This was a few months ago, his mom went back to work and I was off with a knee injury, I spent a few afternoons with him so his dad could get stuff done around the house.”

She takes the photo and passes Ivy back to him, she immediately snuggles into him and taking a fistful of his sweater vest. “Henry’s very lucky to have you in his life.”

Spencer reaches into the stroller and grabs the pacifier laying where she once was, slipping it into Ivy’s mouth before she rests her head against him. “I think she’s finally tired.”

“The Reid effect might just be making kids take a good nap,” she teases, still holding the photo with a wide smile.

He leans back against the bench and gives Ivy the chance to lay on him better, “she’s learned so much by listening to us talk, she’s probably exhausted.”

“I should probably bring her home…” Y/N frowned, “do you think you could walk back with us? She might stay asleep on you, I can put the baby wrap on you and everything?”

“Sure,” he nods, trying his best not to smile too hard at just how excited he is.

The walk isn’t long, Y/N pushes the stroller beside him as they walk the D.C streets together. She asks him if he’s used to the neighbourhood and he goes on a tangent about geography. It makes her laugh, complimenting how interesting he is before they finally arrive at her complex.

“You live here?” He stops abruptly outside of her apartment.

“Yeah, why?”

“My boss lives here…”

“Aaron and Jack?”

“How did you—?”

“Oh my god…” she takes a minute to blink and think it all over. “Agent Prentiss came and talked to me when he was abducted from his apartment, I thought that the gunshot noise was just a tire popping on the street or something. I was super pregnant and he came over to tell me what had happened, how he’d been stabbed by an intruder and that I should invest in a security system.”

“Well, it’s a good thing you told me,” she shakes the nerves out, “I thought he was just a single dad, I was going to try asking him out but I didn’t think she was murdered…

“He might not want you to know all the details,” he doesn’t really react to what she said, “but the guy who hurt him and his wife is dead, so there isn’t anything to worry about. Also, I don’t think he’s ready to date yet.”

“He has a lot of visitors, there’s a bubbly blonde woman who loves to talk to Ivy when she sees her and then another woman with a kid, and agent Prentiss,” she explains, folding the stroller and opening the apartment complex door for Spencer.

“The one with the kid is JJ and Henry, my godson, the bubbly woman is Penelope, and Agent Prentiss is our friend Emily,” Spencer explained, walking through the door with Ivy strapped to his chest, nervous to see if anyone else is at Aaron’s place today.

“I also know Dave, he’s really sweet with Jack, I thought he was Aarons boyfriend for a few months…”

It makes him laugh, almost startling Ivy awake. “The only member of the BAU you haven’t met is Derek.”

She squints, thinking back long and hard, “yeah I don’t know a Derek.”

It makes him laugh, “good, he’s slept with most of the women in the city, and single moms love him. I don’t need another co-worker to compete with.”

In the elevator she can’t stop smiling, “it’s not really a competition when you’re the only one in the race.”

He turns to face her with an open mouth, shocked that she said it and unsure how to respond. And then the elevator door opens.

“Spencer?”

“Hotch.”

“Hi, Aaron,” Y/N smiles, “where’s the little guy today?”

“He’s inside with his aunts, Jess and Emily,” Aaron replies, still confused, his head tilts slightly. “I just have to run to the store…”

“Oh, fun!” Y/N cheers.

“How did—

“He sat beside me at the park and Ivy fell asleep in his arms, he’s simply making sure she stays asleep for me before I pull all my hair out,” she smiles, turning to Spencer fondly, “you could have told me your friend is the baby whisperer.”

“And you could have told me there was a beautiful single mom next door, maybe I’d offer to babysit Jack more often,” Spencer teases.

“It honestly slipped my mind that you’d want me to introduce you to someone,” he looks back and forth between them. “Here, go on and put that girl to bed, you can come join us if you want?”

“Uh,” Y/N stares up at Spencer, “maybe, we’ll see. It honestly depends on how long she stays down for.”

“She’s probably going to wake up the second I put her down,” Spencer teases, stepping out of the elevator with Y/N and heading down the hallway.

“See you around?” Y/N asks.

“I hope so,” Aaron smiles

Sure enough, when Y/N begins to take the wrap off of Spencer, freeing the sleeping child from his embrace, she starts to cry. Spencer simply grabs a blanket to surround her in warmth again, swaddling her quickly and laying her in her crib before she can even really wake up.

They slip out of the room, closing the door gently and waiting just a moment to hear a cry, but it’s silent. They carefully high five, touching hands quickly before his fly to her cheeks, holding her face carefully before kissing her.

He backs her up against the wall, her hands explore his back as she swipes her tongue along his bottom lip and deepens the kiss. She kisses him like it’s been a while, and he kisses her back the same because it has for him too. He’s missed this and yet he’s worried all at the same time.

When he pulls away, she whines, “I thought you wanted to be friends?”

She giggles, “I do.”

“So this?” He motions between them.

“This is a thank you,” she whispers. “And if you would like, we can see if this friendship blossoms into something more?”

He nods, “can I just say, having a family is a big dream of mine too, I don’t know how the heck anyone could leave you knowing you made sure a wonderful child with them? I can’t fathom leaving someone willing to have my family.”

“Thank you,” the look on her face is as if that simple compliment fills her heart with a warmth she hasn’t felt in a very long time. “You can stay if you want? Or see your friends, I don’t mind?”

“I am seeing a friend right now,” he smirks, “do you want me to get out of your hair?”

“No,” she shakes her head, “I have laundry and things to do, but if you want to stay the way you do for JJ, I wouldn’t mind?”

“Not at all, actually, if you don’t have dinner plans I can run to the store and make the pasta I used to make for me and my mom growing up?”

“Sounds perfect.”

“Doctor Reid,” he answers the phone, thinking it's work-related as he reads over a case file in a random police precinct in some random town in Wyoming.

“You sound professional,” she whispers, “are you busy?”

“Y/N?” He questions, forgetting how late it is in Virginia.

“Who else calls you in the middle of the night?”

“It’s only 1 in the morning where I am,” he replies, “I’m in Wyoming tonight, we left earlier this morning, sorry I didn’t have time to tell you.”

“Ooooo, that’s fine, honestly I like knowing you’re like a superhero,” she acts like it’s the coolest thing in the world. “What’s the case this week, doc?”

“Teenagers are strangling themselves as part of an online dare,” he replies quickly, looking around the room and making sure no one is going to yell at him. “I’m probably not going to be home in time to have that playdate tom-, tonight I guess now, they do this on Fridays, we only have tonight to find the guy.”

“Holy shit,” she says that a lot when she hears the awful things he works on. “Okay, well I’m always free, when you get back we can reschedule. Do you need me to call you back later? Are you too busy?”

“No,” he shakes his head, “we’re tracking the unsub through the website, I’m just reading over the files, but it’s not like I have to with my memory.”

“Humblebrag,” she teases, “what kind of person would do this?”

“We think he’s a teenager.”

“Ah,” she sighs, “have you looked into medical records of parental abuse? Have any kids, or their mothers, been to the hospital for choking? Monkey see monkey do and all that?”

“Garcia,” he calls across the room, covering the speaker of his phone, “have you checked out teenagers or their mothers in the ER with choking-related injuries?”

“No, but that’s a good idea!” She calls back.

“Thank you,” he smiles over the phone and the team catches it.

“Who is he on the phone with?” He overhears Morgan ask.

“I think it’s Y/N,” Hotch replies.

“Who?” Garcia and Morgan ask in unison.

“She’s my neighbour, she’s a childhood development practitioner, they’re friends, he’s probably getting her opinion on what kind of teenager would do this.”

He’s not wrong, it makes Spencer smile at them, “sorry, what did you say I was listening to my team?”

“Oh, just that Ivy misses you.”

“Sure, it’s just her,” he teases, “I miss you both, too. I haven’t had that many hugs since I was 6 and we visited my aunt Ethel.”

It makes her laugh, “the daily recommended dose of hugs per day is 12. If you’re running low I’m always here with my arms open.”

“I got one!” Garcia yells.

“I’ve got to go,” he hurries, “if we get the guy I’ll call you on the way home?”

“I’ll be waiting, be safe?”

“You too,” he smiles before hanging up and sliding his phone in his pocket.

He’s sitting on the plane with his phone in his pocket, about to tell Y/N that he’s on the way back but he still hasn’t even figured out a way to actually get to look after Henry. She’s sitting across from him, beside Penelope and he needs to get her alone.

“JJ, can I talk to you in the back?” He whispers.

“Sure,” she smiles, following him to the kitchenette and making a Tea as she listens to his dilemma. She watches with a soft smile as he tells her all about this beautiful woman and her daughter and just how much it would mean to him if he could borrow Henry for the night.

“We would love a date night!” Is essentially how she hears it. “I’ll call Will and have him get his sleepover bag ready, and he’ll drop him off with his playpen so he can sleep a bit before we pick him up again.”

“It would be easier to just bring him to her place,” he says, “she lives in Hotch’s building, right beside him actually. You might remember Y/N and her daughter Ivy?”

“Oh, she’s cute,” she smiles wider, “wow, I’m surprised we didn’t think to introduce you sooner, Hotch said she was a single mom… oh this is going to be nice for you.”

“She is, and she knows I was raised by a single mom and how it’s my biggest dream to be a dad.”

“Awe, Spence,” she places a hand over her heart and swoons, “why have you never told me that?”

“Because I didn’t want to jinx it,” he shrugs. “I wanted to have kids with you for a while, and when you and Will told us in New York that you were pregnant, I gave up trying. I never realized I could find something like this.”

She brings him in for a hug, “I know, and I’m sorry it didn’t work out with us. I personally believe Henry was always supposed to be my baby, and he’s really going to need his cool uncle Spence to teach him that it’s okay to be who he is in this world. Everything happens for a reason.”

“You’re right,” he whispers as he releases her from his grasp. “I always thought I’d end up being a stepdad one day, I’m not sure why.”

“Because of what happened to you, I always thought you would as well,” she agrees. “You can’t help but see yourself in this kid and you have this deep need to care for people, it’s wonderful, but make sure you’re doing what’s best for you as well.”

“I will,” he smiles, “thank you.”

“So 6:30 tonight, does that work for you? Are you sure you can handle it?”

Spencer laughs, changing the topic back and relaxing his shoulders finally, “yes, she’s a child development practitioner, and if anything happens, Hotch is just down the hall anyway.”

JJ smiles, squeezing his arm slightly. “I’m so happy for you, Spence.”

He doesn’t end up calling her to say he’s on his way home, arriving back at Quantico by 3 in the afternoon, he does his paperwork and heads right to Y/N’s apartment. He knows it’s Ivy’s nap time and so he knocks softly, Y/N opens the door just as quietly with a smile before she wraps him up in her arms.

“Hello,” he smiles, holding her back just as tight with his chin pressed into her shoulder. He hasn’t seen her since Saturday,

“I had a feeling you’d be here early.”

“I missed you,” he runs his hands over her back before she pulls away, “how are you?”

She shrugs, “we had a rough morning… She went through a few outfits and tired herself out, but she’s probably going to wake up soon.”

He tilts his head to the side, “but how are you?”

“Stressed but okay,” she smiles softly, “I’m so happy to see you, and I’ve done basically everything I needed to for the day, so now my attention is yours until she’s awake.”

He wraps her up in another hug, “JJ and Will are bringing Henry around 6:30, he’s really easy to care for it’ll be really fun.”

“I worked at a daycare before Ivy, Spence, I can handle 7 toddlers at a time, this’ll be a piece of ca—”

Before she can finish the sentence they hear a cry from down the hall, they simply smile at each other and make their way towards it. She stops at the door and opens it slowly, letting Spencer in first.

Ivy stops as soon as she sees Spencer lean over the crib, she puts her arms up and reaches for him, waiting for him to pick her up. When he does, she snuggles against him and holds his shirt in her hand while her forehead rests against his neck.

He loves her little hugs, there is absolutely nothing better.

“Miss Ivy,” Y/N smiles at her, “mama needs to change your diaper but then you can go right back into his arms okay?”

She takes her from Spencer and of course, she cries and reaches for him. “Can you go out of the room for this?”

“Of course,” he says, slipping out of the room but feeling horrible when her cries get worse. He stays in the hallway, just past the door and listens as Y/N shushes her, talking her through her diaper change and making her feel better.

She’s sniffling softly, whining but not crying as loud as before, accepting that Spencer isn’t there and that he’ll be back soon. It’s the sweetest thing and yet his heartaches, he feels the same kind of love for Ivy as he does for Henry and yet he never thought his heart could expand like that again.

She gasps when she sees Spencer again, making the funniest noise as she tries to hold herself up in her mom's arms and reach for him. Y/N hands her over, “you know, I’m starting to get jealous.”

“It’s nice to be able to use your hands though,” he reminds her. “I remember Henry was attached to JJ for the first 9 months, she couldn’t put him down or he’d cry.”

“Well then,” she smirks, “I’m going to go start dinner if you’d like to join me in the kitchen? Keep us company?”

“Absolutely,” he bounces Ivy in his arms a bit and makes her giggle again, “to the kitchen we go!”

Y/N is the best mom he’s ever seen in action. Better than his own, which isn’t that hard to do. She’s aware, she’s hopeful and she wants to be the best mom in the world. Spencer can’t help but smile at her as she explains what she’s doing like they’re on a cooking show, making Ivy giggle in his arms as she lays out all the materials that she needs.

“So, Henry doesn’t have any allergies right?”

“Nope,” Spencer smiles, sitting Ivy on the counter so she can lean back against his chest and watch the show.

“Good, so I’m making homemade chicken nuggets, this way I can sneak in some spinach and chopped carrots in it, under the breading, and he’ll think they’re delicious.”

“You’re amazing,” he swoons.

She shrugs with a smug look on her face, “it’s nothing.”

But sure enough, she mixes the chopped veggies with the ground chicken and she rolls them out before pressing Dinosaur-shaped cookie cutters into them. “So now they have to sit in the freezer for half an hour so that they stay in shape when we bread them.”

Spencer makes Ivy clap her hands, getting a giggle out of her again and making her mother smile, “what’s next on the little lady’s schedule?”

“Tummy time,” she smiles and points at the playmat in the living space, just off from the kitchen. “You can go lay there with her too, I’ll have my eyes on you, not that I don’t trust you but, you know.”

“I know,” he presses his lips together awkwardly, “my mom had to step in and make sure I wasn’t talking to creeps a lot growing up, I was very friendly but that’s the worst thing a kid can be sometimes.”

She nods, “I hate it. I just want to raise her in a world where she’s safe and doesn’t have to go through what we went through.”

“That’s why I do what I do,” his smile falters. “I have a book actually, in my satchel, with all the names of the kids we’ve brought home and sometimes I think about all the names of kids we stopped from ever having to end up on a list…”

“I’m not a big fan of cops,” she’s honest and nervous about it, “but you and your team are different— you’re like the cheat book that you buy when you can’t beat the really hard level on a video game, you know the programming behind peoples actions, you don’t just go in guns-a-blazing, you give a fuck about who comes out of there.”

“I do, I wouldn’t say every agent feels that way, but I try.”

“Sorry,” she places her hand on the counter close to his, “you know, you can bring her playmat in here and set her down, and we could keep talking?”

He nods, lifting Ivy up and cradling her in his arm as Y/N grabs the mat. She sets it on the ground by the kitchen counter island, still on the carpeted area. Cleaning the kitchen up with Spencer as Ivy lays there, holding her little head up with her fist in her mouth, cooing as she tries to look up at them.

“So why don’t you have a partner if you want a family so badly?”

He takes a deep breath, “well…”

“Sorry,” she realizes how intense it was. “I do that a lot, I just dive right in.”

He reaches a hand out for her and pulls her into a hug, “I don’t mind, I have a hard time connecting to people.”

“Sure seems like it,” she teases, holding him and rocking him back and forth. “Do you just not reach out to people?”

“Honestly,” he raises his brows and thinks back, “no. I’ve tried, at work, there was a girl Elle, I liked her but she left. And JJ got pregnant and engaged to Will, and Emily is gay…”

“People exist outside of work,” she reminds him, pulling back and checking on Ivy, “I’m surprised you’ve never hit on me at the park before.”

“I don’t hit on people,” he laughs. “I personally like people for who they are, how they treat others… everyone I’ve crushed on has been nice to me, even if only once.”

“Me too,” she smiles. “And now I’ve extended that to people who are nice to my kid.”

“Hmm,” he smiles down at Ivy, getting down on the kitchen floor, sitting criss-cross, “are you saying you wanted to pick me up at the park?”

“I’d be lying if I told you I haven’t seen you before,” she admits, “you were playing chess a while back with a young boy, you were wearing tweed, I thought you looked cute. I knew that was your preferred bench.”

He just smiles, “I’m glad you’re bolder than I am.”

“You still sat with me, you struck up a conversation, I was expecting you to pick a new seat.”

He picks Ivy up and holds her against his chest, “your mommy used you to make friends.”

There’s a knock at the door before she can even tease him back.

JJ shows up 15 minutes early, cutting their chat short to meet the woman Spencer is so smitten over and assuring that she’s safe to leave Henry with. Will almost has to pull her from the door frame to make her actually leave, they end up hitting it off pretty well and Spencer knows this won't be the last time Henry and Ivy play together.

Henry loves Y/N. He asks for more Dino chicken nuggets, dipping them in ketchup along with his smile fries and teaching her all the songs he knows between bites that might be a little too big. Spencer watches nervously, thinking he might choke from all the laughter.

The chicken nuggets are amazing. Spencer is normally very picky with textures, and yet he would enjoy eating them again. Y/N smiles at him often, holding little Ivy in her arms as she also ate dinner and Spencer tried desperately to avoid looking. But it was beautiful, it’s what breasts are made for and it’s a wonderful thing to witness, even if boobs are also his weakness.

It makes her laugh, she can see that he’s trying to not be uncomfortable and she appreciates it. “Did JJ breastfeed?” She cuts the awkwardness and kid talk.

“No,” he presses his lips together awkwardly, “she tried, we thought he was tongue-tied for a while because he wasn’t latching very well.”

“We,” she smiles, “you are like his second father aren’t you?”

“I’m not a real doctor, but my friends do spend a lot of time asking me medical questions instead of google because I won't just immediately tell them it’s cancer,” he tries to make her smile and she laughs instead, chest rising and disrupting Ivy.

“Sorry,” she runs her hand over Ivy’s hairless head, “she’s been really good, luckily, and I produce enough to have extras in the fridge that I donate to a mom down the street who adopted a newborn.”

“I’ve never really seen anyone breastfeed,” he admits, staring without feeling bad about it.

“It’s really cool,” Y/N smiles down at Ivy, holding her boob out of the way so she can see her precious face as she eats. “I knew we’d bond really well seeing as I grew and birthed her, but this is the best time for us. I love feeling so close to her.”

Spencer just smiles, letting all the air in his lungs huff out as his head drops to the side in adoration. “I think you’re amazing.”

Henry cuts the moment short by flicking his chicken nugget and getting ketchup on Spencer’s cheek, laughing maniacally before trying to do it again, “Hey, that’s not nice, Y/N worked really hard on those.”

Henry smirks, and by the time Spencer’s turning his attention back to Y/N, she’s clipping her bra back on and moving to start burping little miss Ivy.

“Was it yummy?” Y/N asks him and Henry nods.

“What do you say to Y/N?”

“Phank you,” he whispers with a smile.

“You’re welcome, honey,” she replies, “I’ve never had someone love my cooking this much.”

“His mommy doesn’t cook often,” Spencer replies for Henry. “Your dad does his best but there’s something special about a meal made with love from a mother.”

“Well,” Y/N smiles, patting ivy’s back and trying to get a burp out of her while still engaging in the conversation. “Any time either of you boys want a big helping of Love, my door is always open.”

“We’ll have to take you up on that.”

Henry finds Ivy incredibly fascinating. He lays on the floor with her, looking up at all the mirrors and colours of her play matt, teaching her how to reach and hit the things that hang and making her giggle. He’s going to be a great big brother one day. But it doesn’t stop him from thinking about Ivy like his own, it feels surreal to introduce the two of them, to feel such a love for Ivy even when he’s known her for 4 days, and his love for Henry is right up there as well.

When JJ and Will come knocking at their door, Henry is cuddled into Y/N on the couch, leaving Spencer to get up, with Ivy still in his arms, to answer the door.

“Hello,” he whispers, “he’s asleep in the living room, one of you will have to carry him.”

He brings them inside, around the corner and into the living space where Y/N smiles and waves under him, “he’s so sweet.”

Will leans in and scoops the poor boy up, wrapping his arms around his dad instinctively, Henry moves easily. “Thank you for watching him for us.”

“Any time,” Y/N offers, standing up to walk with them to the door. “We had a great time, I would’ve moved him to his pack-n-play but he was so snuggly.”

JJ wraps her up in a tight hug, the way she would with Spencer, “he doesn’t cuddle up to many people so you must be special.”

“I just make good Dino nuggets,” she shrugs, holding her back and it makes Spencer’s heart almost jump out of his chest.

“Thank’s Spence,” Will thanks him as well, “if you two ever need someone to watch Ivy while you go on a date, I’m free most of the time too.”

Y/N laughs, thankfully, “when she’s not breastfeeding as often, I’ll take you up on that offer.”

He just stares at her, holding her baby in his arms and somehow shocked that she’d want to go on a date with him sometime. “Or we can all go out together and bring both the kids?”

It just falls out of his mouth.

“That would be really fun too,” Y/N smiles back at him, “but we should get her to bed, and he’s probably heavy.”

“Yeah,” Will laughs, “thanks again.”

“Anytime,” Y/N opens the door and holds it for them.

“Do you need a ride home Spencer?” JJ asks carefully, he can tell she’s nervous.

“I’ve got a guest room,” Y/N smiles, answering for him.

“Okay, I’ll see you tomorrow,” she hugs Spencer quickly, trying to not wake the baby in his arms, and then they’re off.

Y/N closes the door and smiles at him, “did you tell them we’re dating?”

“No, I simply said you’re a woman I’m interested in,” he’s honest because he wants to keep her, and this is how. “But if you’re not ready, or you don’t want to, I’d love to be your friend for as long as you’ll keep me around.”

She leans in and presses her lips to his cheek, “let’s put her in her crib and talk about this?”

He nods, following her down the hall and into Ivy’s room. He places her in her crib carefully, she’s still sound asleep, Y/N reaches into her crib and places a monitor on her foot, “I’m beta testing this, it connects to the monitor and tells me if her pulse or temperature changes during the night.”

“That’s really cool,” he whispers back.

Waiting for her to finish and then leaving the room with her the same way he did just a few days ago. Only this time, she doesn’t kiss him, she takes his hand and leads him down the hallway. Into her bedroom. And then she sits on her bed.

She pats the spot beside her, “it’s comfortable and quiet in here, I’m not going to jump you.”

He laughs slightly and joins her, “what did you want to talk about?”

“Well, if this is going to work out I’m going to need to know just a bit more about you,” she starts, turning to him more and smiling. “Like what are those 3 Ph.D.’s? What’s your mom’s name and can I meet her? Does she live in DC too or were you born somewhere else?”

He laughs, “how long have you wanted to ask?”

“Since the park, I think you’re fascinating.”

It makes him blush, “chemistry, mathematics and engineering are my doctorates, my mom is Diana she has schizophrenia and she lives in Las Vegas. That’s where I was born and I visit her sometimes, I haven’t been home in a while and she doesn’t like to fly out here.”

“I’d love to take Ivy on an airplane one day…”

He shakes his head, “she’s going to end up calling me dad the more I’m around. Is that something you want? I can’t get too involved with you and have her get attached to me just to have to leave her if this doesn’t work out. I can’t put another kid through what I went through.”

“That’s why I want you,” she whispers. “When I named her Ivy, I didn’t expect her to grow around someone’s heart and claim them as her own. But she loves you, it’s very clear she’s infatuated with you. She’s never loved anyone other than me the way she loves you, and it’s making me love you as well.”

He doesn’t know how to respond to how many times she says the word Love, his heart is aching, pounding in his chest at all the possibilities a future with her would hold.

“My biggest dream in life was to become a mom,” she whispers, moving in even closer and closer until she’s looking for approval to sit in his lap.

He lets her in and his hands rest on her hips as she sits and settles, holding his face in her hands. “But now I think my dream is to have a big happy family. All I’ve been thinking about since you said you’ve always wanted kids, plural, is that Ivy might never be a big sister, and then I saw her with Henry and we all had dinner and I want a big family.”

“Are you sure you want that with someone like me?”

Her hands run from his cheeks to his shoulders, “is there a good enough reason for me to run away from you, or are you a master at self-sabotage?” She reads him like a book. “Because so far you’re smart kind and handsome. You’re trustworthy and your friends love you. And they’re all agents, I’d be stupid not to trust you.”

“I have some past drug problems, autism, and heavy bouts of anxiety and depression,” he whispers. “I’m also really good at keeping my word, and I promise I’ll be whatever you need me to be.”

“I don’t have a problem with any of that,” she turns her head to the side, “has someone told you that you’re unloveable because of those things? Because if anything all I see is a man who was handed the worst and somehow made a good life for himself.”

He smiles, “I’m trying really hard.”

“Trying is the best thing a person can do,” she reminds him, kissing the tip of his nose before smiling again. “So, why don’t we try?”

He nods, “Can I ask who her real dad is? Can I know more about you too?”

“Yeah, of course,” she nods feverishly, “his name’s Logan, he lives in Idaho now with his wife and their 3rd baby on the way.”

“You’re fucking kidding?” Spencer shakes his head, “what?”

“He knew I wanted kids, I told him when he asked about my job, but I didn’t know he had a wife. He just wanted sex when he was in town, I thought it was a real relationship,” she shrugs.

“I’m so sorry,” Spencer can’t believe it, “does his wife know?”

She nods, “it’s not the first time he’s done this, but she’s more into his money than his affection so she doesn’t care and she sends me a grand a month to keep me quiet.”

He just shakes his head again, unable to process how someone could do that. “My dad left us and then lives 10 minutes down the road from me for years and never told me. I was struggling to clothe and feed myself while making sure my mom stayed alive and well enough that I wouldn’t get taken away from her. And he was 10 minutes down the road.”

“Some people are fucking horrible, but they make really amazing kids,” she whispers in return.

“They do,” he agreed, “but not always. Sometimes it’s the exact opposite. It takes a special person to overcome the horrible environments they grew up in. Luckily mine wasn’t too unbearable, and it in return made me anxious that I’m not useful enough and that I will lose people if I don’t do everything for them.”

“Ah,” she smirks, “you’re more of a Jung guy? Personally, I find Freud fascinating.”

“Freud had his moments,” he can’t help but laugh slightly. “Like I do think I’m attracted to women who are like my mother, in the way that I enjoy having someone to care for now. I know you’re capable but I have this urge to just take care of you now.”

“See, my parents were pretty normal,” she looks off and thinks about it. “But my dad was really smart, we had a lot of intellectual conversations and he loved learning. So it makes a lot of sense why I want to talk to you all day long.”

“Was?”

She nods, “both my parents have passed, it’s just me and miss Ivy here.”

“I’m so sorry.”

“It’s okay,” she places her hands back on his cheeks, “and I don’t have any siblings either. So it’s just me, and I don’t want to leave her all alone one day when I go. She needs a big family, even if it’s a found family like your work team. They seem like a good group.”

“They are. Rossi has a huge mansion and we have dinner there often. He’s honestly like a cool grandpa, and Hotch and Jack are right next door, Emily’s probably going to be over a lot now since she’s started dating Hotch’s sister-in-law. And Henry can be like Ivy’s cousin, and whatever other kids my team has. I know Derek wants some eventually too,” he makes sure to soothe her mind, “believe me, once you’re in the group they don’t let you go easily.”

“I don’t actually have a guest bedroom… I thought I’d come out and say that now, in case you want to stay the night with me and tell me more about your life?”

It’s a simple offer and yet Spencer’s heart hears; ‘don’t leave me.’

“I have my go bag in my car, can I just get ready for the night?”

She nods, “I’m going to get ready too, lock up when you come back in, do you want a glass of water for your night table? Do you take any nighttime meds? I wouldn’t want you to miss them because of me.”

“I don’t,” he smiles at her for thinking that and not judging if he did, “a water would be nice, though.”

She presses her lips to his, finally, breathing him in before she breaks back. It’s a classic smooch, and he pulls her back in for a dozen more. She squirms her way out of his arms and off the bed, disappearing into the bathroom and letting him leave.

He steps out into the hallway at the same time Emily is leaving Aarons, “hey stranger?”

“Oh,” Spencer’s a little shocked. “You’re here late?”

“Aaron had to go help Jess’s dad with something tonight, she fell asleep and he just got home, so…” Emily explains, pressing the down button on the elevator and waiting beside him. “You?”

“Y/N and I watched Henry tonight, I’m just going to get my pyjamas and toothbrush from my car.”

“Nice,” she smiles, “aren’t you glad it’s me here and not Penelope?”

He sighs, “absolutely, I’m sure Hotch or JJ has already told her.”

“Everyone knows,” she smiles.

The elevator door opens and they ride down in almost perfect silence, “she has a little baby right?”

He nods, “you met her when she was pregnant when Hotch was missing.”

“Yeah the day you got shot,” she reminds him. “She’s nice, she gave me water and asked if I wanted a sandwich? She made cookies for the other agents on the scene too.”

He laughs, “that’s Y/N alright. She made homemade Dino nuggets for Henry tonight.”

“Wow,” she’s so happy for him and Spencer can see it. “Well, you have fun tonight and wrap it unless you want Ivy and the next one to have the same birthday.”

He laughs it off, “we’re not there yet. She has a guest room.” He lies incredibly easy, matching the story to what JJ will inevitably tell her and Penelope.

“No she doesn’t, the guest room has a kid in it, the same reason why Jess sleeps on the pullout couch.”

“That’s what I’m doing too,” he’s still not convincing.

“Sure,” she laughs as the doors open, “I’ll see you at work tomorrow.”

“Emily,” he stops her before she can get too far in the parking garage, “do you think I’d be a good step-dad?”

“You’re a wonderful little brother and godfather, this will be like second nature for you,” she assures him with a smile.

“Thank you,” he smiles, “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“You will,” she waves one last time before turning away.

They wake up to the sound of crying on the monitor, Spencer’s eyes flutter open to see Y/N raising her head from his chest and rubbing her eyes, “I’ve got her.”

“Okay,” he agrees groggily, letting her out of the bed and watching her slip out the door.

He hears her enter the room from the monitor, “hello little miss Ivy, good morning.”

The sounds of her giving her a hug, shushing her and Ivy’s tears stop. She talks her through a diaper change and it makes Spencer smile as he tries to fall back asleep.

“You’re hungry aren’t you?” She asks as the fussiness returns. “Come on, let’s go, I’ve got a surprise for you.”

And that surprise was Spencer. She lays Ivy in the bed and she rolls over to face him, “good morning,” he whispers as her hands reach for his shirt. She has a strong grip, pulling herself towards him.

“Ives he doesn’t have boobs,” she laughs picking her up as soon as she’s settled in the bed with her breastfeeding pillow.

She resists it at first until Y/N puts her on the Left boob and she can still hold on to Spencer’s finger as he lays beside them. He hasn’t woken up this peacefully in a very long time, even if she cried, it was his 2nd favourite sound in the world now.

The first is her laughter. Which he wakes up after having a short nap beside them. Dozing off during her feeding and coming back to the both of them laying beside him, poking his cheeks. He opens his eyes slowly and smiles at her, “hi, miss Ivy.”

“Hi,” Y/N says on her behalf, raising her hand in a wave that makes them both laugh.

Spencer wraps an arm around Ivy and pulls her in for a hug, resting her on one side of his chest while Y/N snuggles in on the other side, “this is really nice.”

“I’d like to wake up like this more often,” he agrees, tired eyes blinking as he tries to stay awake but the warmth on his chest makes sleep seem so inviting.

But Ivy picks her head up and bumps her forehead against his jaw, wanting more of his attention. He sits up, holding her in a better position and reaching for his glasses on the night table. She pulls on his hair then, “ow, ow, ta-ta, please let go.”

“Ta-ta?” Y/N laughs at him.

“It’s what JJ says when Henry pulls her hair, it works,” and it does because she lets go of his hair as Y/N grabs a hair tie for him.

She gets onto her knees and brushes his hair back, putting it in a little bun and smiling when it’s finished. “You’re so cute.”

He leans in and presses a kiss to her lips as ivy leans in and slobbers on his cheek, making them laugh, “oh she’s going to be so smart.”

“Obviously,” Spencer replies, “she’s your Ivy.”

“And now I’m somehow covered in you.”
